Distance Series #1 Ski Prep

by Joel on Dec.09, 2009, under Ski Race Wax Recommendation

This is the first post regarding ski prep for the upcoming race. Given the dirty snow we have, it will be important to get the skis cleaned and proper base layers applied. First the skis should be cleaned. To do this we need to first brush out the skis with a copper brush then a horse hair brush. Next perform a hot wipe. This is done by melting on a yellow wax and immediately wiping off all of the wax with a lint free paper like Toko Base Tex or Swix Fiberlene. This will clean the skis without the use of a solvent. Next the bases need to be hardened up the the cold weather that is coming by waxing with a cold wax like Toko Blue or equivalent. Now we need to apply a layer of Toko Moly. It will help repel dirt and improve break-a-way speed. Due to the cold and the fact that Toko Moly is in a base of red wax you will want to mix it with LF blue 1:1 to keep the desired hardness. Now you are ready to apply the race wax. I will post updates with those recommendations over the next couple days. We will be likely be using high and pure fluoro wax to repel dirt. Dirt will slow skis faster then anything and the goal will be to have good glide at the end of the race.    Joel

Classic Sprint Race Wax Report

by Joel on Dec.07, 2009, under Post Race Wax Report

Classic Sprint Race was a bit warmer then our typical classic conditions. After testing multiple brands we settled on Toko Viola. We put two layers full length and tapered back two more progressively shorter layers. We also had equal kick and glide from Swix VR 50 applied in 7 layers, but due to the fact it wax hard to apply by comparison our recommendation was Toko. We tested Rode, and Start waxes as well but got better glide with the same kick out of Toko Carbon and Swix VR. One important note is that the waxes needed to be skied in a couple km to get them to glide well. If testing was to short it resulted in false result as far as grip and glide.

As for the glide we applied a layer of Toko LF Moly scraped and brushed, then HF Red scraped and brushed with a copper and horsehair brush then covered with HelX Red and buffed in. We tested HeliX blue but it was a tad slower. We avoided waxing with warmer waxes to reduce the amount of dirt that wax pickup by the ski that would slow them down. The LF Moly repels dirt and improves breakaway speed.

If you have any question while waxing for the races just stop by the Goldstream Sports Trailer in the lower parking lot during the races.
