Commute By Bike

by Joel on Apr.20, 2010, under News

Your daily 4-mile bike commute will save about 66 gallons of fuel per year. If just one person in a thousand were to follow your lead in biking 4 miles a day instead of driving, we’d save 429 million gallons of fuel each year.

That same daily trip will burn 36,000 calories over the course of a year—the equivalent of over 10 lbs of fat. In fact, the average person loses 13lbs in the first year of commuting by bike.

Dream Bikes

by Joel on Apr.15, 2010, under News

With proper care, a quality bike can last thousands of miles and survive multiple owners. Unfortunately, most bikes are discarded long before their useful life is fulfilled. Enter Dream Bikes; a pilot non-profit organization funded by Trek.

Dream Bikes teaches youth in challenged neighborhoods to fix, repair, and build new life into donated bikes of any brand. The revamped bikes are sold to the public, with special terms and pricing available to those in direct need of affordable transportation to school and work. Dream Bikes also takes the damaged, unsafe, and un-savable bikes and disassembles them into their valuable, recyclable core components of aluminum and steel.

Recycling Bicycle Tubes

by Joel on Apr.10, 2010, under News

Bicycle tubes are the shortest-lived parts on a bicycle. To increase their lifespan, Trek bicycle company partnered with Alchemy Goods to create a reuse system with our US dealers. When a customer comes in to have a tube replaced, the dealer will send the old one to Alchemy to create Bontrager bags. The result is a tough pannier to help you carry more goods by bike, made from material that would otherwise sit in a landfill.

We have a drop box at the store to collect tube so you do not have to throw them away.

Bike Advocacy Blog

by Joel on Apr.08, 2010, under Bike, News

This is a great Blog by the President of Trek Bicycle Company, a bike advocate and avid rider. A Great Ride, by Trek’s President, JB

Now is the time to show up

You’ve heard my message about how important it is to show up. Well, today is your day. Here is an important message from the League of American Bicyclists that I think anyone who cares about cycling should take a moment to read and take action. Thanks for showing up. Jb.

On March 15th, the Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, announced a new policy statement that calls for the end of treating bicycling and walking as second-class modes of transportation. Read the whole statement.
LaHood’s leadership sets a great example for the states to follow. It is an important step in completing bicycle and pedestrian networks all over the country. But there is a lot of work to do to get there. Already, opponents have attacked the secretary for speaking out in favor of active transportation. We need our elected officials and state Departments of Transportation to really understand how important bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is to all of us. You can help!

Please take a moment to:
·        Thank Secretary LaHood for his leadership on this issue and call on him to continue to fight for safe, healthy, clean transportation options – thank him on Facebook, (also follow his blog and Twitter feed)
·        Urge your governor and state DOT to support the USDOT policy statement on bicycling and walking, and
·        Find advocacy organizations and clubs in your area (enter your zip code) and work with them to speak up for bicycling!

The League of American Bicyclists is eager to ensure that the priorities of the policy statement are realized. Help us continue our efforts.

Trek Doing Things Right

by Joel on Apr.07, 2010, under News

A big company has a big footprint, so we need to tread carefully.

Trek is one of the biggest bicycle manufacturers in the world. But that doesn’t mean we want to throw our weight around. We continuously evaluate our manufacturing processes and business practices to be sure our actions, and those of our employees, reflect our better-world goals.

Green Energy

Trek is the first manufacturer in Wisconsin to switch entirely to renewable electric power. We used to burn 10.5 million pounds of coal each year. Now we burn 0. We’ve undertaken smaller-scale changes, too, like converting our entire Waterloo facility to low-energy-consumption lighting.

Smarter Shipping

Bikes are incredibly efficient vehicles. Trucks, not so much. We’ve worked hard to reduce our truck miles on two fronts: we use close sourcing to minimize shipping between our suppliers and our manufacturers, and we’ve revamped our distribution system to rely increasingly on intermodal shipping, eliminating thousands of over-the-road miles in favor of more efficient rail freight.

Car Pooling

At our Waterloo, WI headquarters, car poolers rule the pavement. Every parking space in the prime lot adjacent to our building is reserved for car poolers only. More than one Trek employee has seen the carpooling light while walking from the back lot to the office on a sub-zero January morning.

Bike Commuting

We love to see our people bike or walk to work, so we make it as convenient as possible. We have a dedicated Commuter Room for indoor bike parking, and full locker rooms for the change from bike togs to workday wear. Ride more than 12 miles to work, and breakfast or lunch is on Trek.

Short Trips

40% of car trips in the US are under two miles. To cut down on those inefficient jaunts, we offer loaner bikes that any employee can grab for workday errands or lunch runs.

Trek Bike Co Advocacy

Bicycle Friendly Communities

BFC is an influential initiative of the League of American Bicyclists that provides guidance, advice, and resources to communities and states to improve their bike infrastructure and provide a positive environment for cyclists. Trek and US Trek dealers have teamed up to donate $1 each of every Trek helmet sold to support BFC. By the end of 2010, this will amount to well over $1 million in funding.

IMBA

The International Mountain Bicycling Association creates, enhances, and preserves great trail experiences for mountain bikers worldwide. $10 from the sale of every Trek full-suspension mountain bike goes to support their efforts, to ensure that we all have a place to ride for generations to come.

Safe Routes to School

This international movement strives to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to school. Trek donated $50,000 to help the Madison Metropolitan School District implement a district-wide Safe Routes plan.
