Joel Buth, Owner

Joel Buth has many years of experience as a ski instructor including coaching multiple high school teams, as well as the UAF Ski Team. Joel has also been giving private lessons for many years. He enjoys teaching all levels of skier, from the beginner to the top junior skiers in the country.

Joel got his start ski racing in high school, and as a senior he placed 4th in the Wisconsin State Championships. The following year he raced at the Junior Nationals at Giants Ridge, Minnesota. In the five years to follow he attended races including the US Nationals and Olympic Trials. As the Olympic dreams faded away, high school coaching became a major focus. Joel coached the Kettle Moraine Lasers in Wisconsin for 5 years and developed a State Championship team in 1998. His top skiers moved on to top collegiate teams and international competitions.

Joel moved to Fairbanks with his wife Paulette in the summer is 1999, and soon after began coaching the West Valley Ski Team. Joel also served as Assistant Coach to the UAF Ski Team.

Opening Goldstream Sports in 2004, Joel’s vision has to become the premier location in Fairbanks for service and advice in ski and bicycle maintenance. Joel uses and sells cutting edge equipment for those serious about getting the most out of their sporting endeavors.

Amanda Byrd, Marketing Manager

Amanda is a competitive sprint musher with a yard full of 18 dogs. When she isn't feeding, watering, training, or cleaning out the dog yard, she enjoys riding road and mountain bikes.

Amanda rode the 24 Hours of Moab in 2007 and plans to return in 2008. Amanda has been almost killed by moose more than anyone else at Goldstream Sports, so stop by and talk to her if you want to know what it's like.

Tyson Flaharty, Store Manager, Bike Mechanic

Tyson Flaharty was born in Fairbanks and is a life-long Alaskan. He attended West Valley High School and raced on their ski team for 3 years before attending UAF and joining their ski team for 2 ½ years. Tyson is currently in his 2nd season skiing for Alaska Pacific University. In the summer of 2006 Tyson married Davya, his high school sweetheart.

Tyson has skied in 2 Junior World Championships, 2 U23 World Championships and in the Scandinavian Cup Series.

Tyson also races in time-trial races and road races in the summer months. He is the head bike mechanic at the store, and is very knowledgeable in bikes and maintenance.

Tyson would like to come back as a Raven as they are smart, tough, love the cold and they eat anything.

Adam Baxter, Ski Physics Technician

Adam Baxter is the newest member of the Goldstream Sports team. Hailing from Marquette, Michigan, Adam’s family moved to Fairbanks in July, 2007 for work and Adam followed to attend UAF, which has the only physics program in Alaska.

Adam rides mountain and road bikes, and has completed the Ore to Shore mountain bike race six years in a row, and placed 7 th in North Carolina Cycle-Cross Championships class C.

Adam joined Goldstream Sports in July and is a full time bike mechanic. He brings with him experience from The Bicycle Shop in Fayetteville, NC and The Sports Rack in Marquette MI, where he also learned to stone grind skis.

Adam plays guitar and his favorite food is peanut butter and jelly with a glass of chocolate milk.

Kai Allen, Bike Mechanic

Kai is an ambitious young man who works at Goldstream Sports when he isn't focused on his studies at West Valley High Shool and being a good student. Kai has built a yurt, practices glass blowing, enjoys 2-cycle engines, and basically a down to earth sort of fellow.

Kai also mushes in the winter. He has no dogs of his own, but being friendly, he knows enough people to borrow some dogs here and there. If you met Kai on a remote trail somewhere, he would probably share an interesting observation about the surrounding forest and the things in it.
