There are two main types of bike pumps: the floor pump which gets a lot of use and stays at home; and the mini pump which gets less use (hopefully) and travels with you. There is a third type of inflation system - the CO2 cartridge inflator.
Floor pumps are a great way to get high pressure quickly into your tires. A floor pump should have a gauge so you can see how much air in the tires; this will help you keep your tires at the right pressure, and not put too much air in. A long hose helps you reach your valves easily and a stable platform assists in pumping and minimizes tipping. A large gauge and tall frame are important for saving your back and eyes. Make sure the pump has both a Schrader and presta valve so you don’t have to find out when you need it most. If though you do have just one type, you can purchase a presta valve adapter for under $1. A great floor pump is the Wrench Force Air Daddy.
When you are on the road or trail, it is important to have a good pump, or a good thumb. Make sure you know the pressure your tire should be at and buy a pump that will get you to that pressure. Mountain bike tires require less pressure than road bike tires and having a low pressure pump for a road bike will not get you to get to the right pressure. Mini-pumps come in a variety of weights and lengths, something you should consider if weight and carrying is an issue. Some attach to your bike frame, others are small enough to fit in your bike bag or pocket. Come in and see our range of mini-pumps and ask the experts which one is best for you.
If weight is an issue, the CO2 inflators are a great choice. The cartridges and inflator fit neatly into any seat pack and a quick shot of CO2 inflates your tire in seconds. Innovations make an inflator which takes both threaded and non-threaded canisters, and also the Air Chuck which is a lightweight head that fits only threaded valves. There is also a neat combination pump that couples a CO2 cartridge with a hand pump that works when the CO2 has run out. Currently we are low in stock in the CO2 inflators, we have plenty of cartridges, but give us a week or so and we will be back in full stock.
Want to ride with your kids, but they can't keep up? Why not let them travel at your speed while still on their own bike! The Trek Mountain Train bikes are a great way to let the kids join in on family bike rides and learn to ride. The bikes fit onto the seat post of just about any bike, and once the seat post fitting is attached, a quick release allows easy removal and attachment.
